How to Make a Silver Clay Ring: Easy Tutorial for Beginners

by Mijn winkel Admin on Mar 09, 2026

Making your own silver ring from silver clay is one of the most rewarding beginner projects. In under an hour of hands-on time, you can go from a lump of clay to a real, wearable sterling silver ring. No jeweler's bench, no soldering, no years of training required.

Follow this step-by-step tutorial to make your very first silver clay ring at home.

What You Will Need

  • Silver clay — 10g is enough for one simple band ring
  • Ring mandrel — a tapered rod used to shape rings (included in our starter kits)
  • Playing cards or rolling guides — to roll clay to even thickness
  • Olive oil or balm — to prevent sticking
  • Small paintbrush — for smoothing with water
  • Sanding pads or nail files — for refining the dried ring
  • Butane torch and fire brick — for firing
  • Brass brush — for finishing

All of these are included in our Silver Clay Starter Kits — everything in one box.

Step 1: Find Your Ring Size

Silver clay shrinks about 8-10% during firing, so you need to start larger than your actual ring size. Wrap a strip of paper around your finger, mark where it overlaps, and measure the length. Then add 10% to that measurement. For example, if your finger measures 52mm around, cut your clay strip to about 57mm long.

Alternatively, use a ring mandrel — go 2-3 sizes up from your actual size to account for shrinkage.

Step 2: Prepare Your Clay

Lightly oil your hands and work surface with olive oil or a clay balm to prevent sticking. Unwrap your silver clay and knead it briefly (10-15 seconds) to make it smooth and pliable. Do not over-knead — the clay will start to dry out.

Step 3: Roll a Strip

Roll the clay into a snake shape, then flatten it into a strip using playing cards as thickness guides (3-4 cards thick works well for a ring band). The strip should be about 5-8mm wide and long enough to wrap around your ring mandrel at the correct size.

Step 4: Wrap Around the Mandrel

Wrap a small piece of paper around the mandrel first (lightly oiled) to prevent sticking. Then wrap your clay strip around the mandrel, overlapping the ends by about 5mm. Press the joint together firmly and smooth it with a damp paintbrush. The join should be invisible.

Step 5: Smooth and Refine While Wet

Use a damp brush to smooth the entire surface of the ring while it is still on the mandrel. Pay extra attention to the join — add a tiny bit of clay paste (silver clay mixed with water) if needed to fill any gaps. Let the ring dry on the mandrel for about 10 minutes, then carefully slide it off.

Step 6: Dry Completely

Let the ring air dry for at least 2 hours, or speed up the process with a hair dryer or mug warmer (15-30 minutes). The ring should feel room temperature against your lip — any coolness means there is still moisture inside.

Step 7: Sand and Refine

This is where your ring goes from "handmade" to "professional." Use fine sanding pads or nail files to smooth the outside and inside of the ring. Sand along the length of the band, not across it. Round the edges gently. You can even carve a pattern or texture into the dry clay with a needle tool.

Step 8: Fire with a Torch

Place your ring on a fire brick. Light your butane torch and hold it about 5-7cm from the ring, moving in small circles. The binder will burn off first (you will see a small flame), then the ring will begin to glow a soft peachy-orange. Hold this temperature for 2-3 minutes. Turn off the torch and let the ring cool, or quench it in water.

Step 9: Brush and Polish

Your fired ring will look white and matte. Brush it vigorously with a brass brush and soapy water to reveal the silver shine. For a mirror finish, use progressively finer polishing papers or a polishing cloth. You can also use a tumbler with steel shot for a professional high-shine finish.

Tips for Success

  • Work quickly — silver clay dries faster than you expect
  • Keep a small bowl of water nearby to re-moisten your brush
  • The drier the clay before firing, the better the result
  • Sand more than you think you need to — it makes a huge difference
  • Your first ring might not be perfect, and that is completely fine
