A real silver ring, made by you, at your kitchen table — no goldsmith training, no furnace. This is the project most of our customers start with, and it's the most satisfying one. Here's exactly how to make a silver clay ring, step by step.
What you need
Silver clay (5–7g for a ring), a ring mandrel or sizing stick, roller, cutting knife, sanding paper, a butane torch and a firebrick. All of it is in the Silver Clay Starter Kit — or grab the clay refill if you already have tools.
Step 1 — Size it right
Important: silver clay shrinks 8–10% during firing. Make your ring band 1.5–2 sizes larger than your target size. Wrap a paper strip around your finger, mark it, and add the shrinkage margin on the mandrel.
Step 2 — Roll and shape the band
Roll the clay into an even strip (about 4–5 playing cards thick). Wrap it around the mandrel on a strip of paper, overlap the ends, and blend the seam with a drop of water. Chunky ring? Roll thicker — it's the current favorite in our community:
Step 3 — Add texture or stones
Before the clay dries: press in patterns with fabric or leaves, stamp initials, or push a cubic zirconia stone straight into the clay (the stone fires along with the ring — it survives the torch).
Step 4 — Dry and refine
Let the ring dry completely (2–3 hours, or 15 minutes with a hairdryer). Then sand the edges smooth. Dry clay carves beautifully — this is where a plain band becomes a one of a kind ring:
Step 5 — Fire it
Place the ring on the firebrick and heat it with the torch until it glows soft orange; hold that glow for 2–3 minutes. The binder burns away and the silver sinters into solid metal. Full walkthrough: how to fire silver clay with a kitchen torch.
Step 6 — Polish to a mirror shine
After firing the ring looks matte white. Brush it with a steel brush, then work through the polishing papers to a mirror finish. You just made a 99.9% fine silver ring.
