Silver Clay

Everything you need to know about silver clay

What is silver clay?

Silver clay is made of microscopic particles of pure silver, an organic binder and water. You roll, cut, texture or mould it like ordinary clay. Once it is completely dry you fire it: the binder burns away and the silver particles fuse into a solid piece of 99.9% fine silver. You will also see it called silver metal clay, precious metal clay or PMC. It is the clay that turns into silver, and it is how many jewellers make their first ring. Silver clay for jewelry making

With a few grams you can make rings, pendants, charms and earrings in solid fine silver. A small pendant takes about 5 g, a simple ring 6 to 9 g, depending on width and thickness. Our silver clay weight guide lists every common project. Need ideas? See 10 silver clay projects and what other makers created.

Fine silver clay or sterling silver clay?

We make fine silver clay (999). It fires with a simple torch or on a gas stove, stays bright and is softer to polish. Sterling silver clay (925) is a little harder but most types need a kiln and a longer firing schedule. For a first piece at home, fine silver clay is the easier choice. Silver clay, PMC and Art Clay Silver

PMC and Art Clay Silver are brand names for the same kind of material. TheLilaLobster silver clay is our own formula and is shaped, dried and fired the same way. If you are switching brands, read silver clay vs PMC and our honest comparison with Art Clay Silver.
