Sterling Silver Clay vs Fine Silver Clay: Which Should You Use?

by Mijn winkel Admin on Jul 31, 2026

Fine silver ring made from 99.9% silver clay

Shopping for metal clay you will see two options: fine silver clay (999) and sterling silver clay (925). They look identical in the packet, but they fire differently and wear differently. Here is how to choose.

The quick answer

For beginners: fine silver clay. It fires with a simple butane torch, needs no special atmosphere, and is the material in our kits. Sterling silver clay is harder-wearing but needs a kiln and carbon firing — a step most people are not set up for.

Fine silver (999)

99.9% pure silver. Softer, warmer white, tarnishes more slowly. Torch-firable in 2–3 minutes on a firebrick. Perfect for pendants, charms, earrings and everyday rings if you keep them reasonably thick. This is what our silver clay fires into.

Sterling (925)

92.5% silver with copper for hardness. Better for thin, high-stress pieces like delicate ring bands or clasps. The catch: it must be kiln-fired, usually buried in activated carbon to keep oxygen away, or the copper oxidises and the piece becomes brittle.

Side by side

Purity: 999 vs 925. Firing: torch or kiln vs kiln + carbon. Shrinkage: ~8–10% vs ~10–15%. Hardness: softer vs harder. Tarnish: slower vs faster. Beginner friendly: yes vs no.

Our recommendation

Start with fine silver. You can make everything from charms to chunky rings without extra equipment, and the finish is a beautiful bright white. Move to sterling only if you specifically need thin, high-stress components and you own a kiln.
