Will Sterling Silver Turn Skin Green? What Actually Causes It

by Mijn winkel Admin on Sep 23, 2026

Hand wearing several handmade fine silver rings set with coloured stones

Will sterling silver turn skin green? Sometimes, yes, and the reason usually has nothing to do with the silver itself. If you have ever taken off a ring at the end of a warm day and found a soft green band underneath, you have seen a very ordinary bit of chemistry at work. It is harmless, it washes off, and once you understand what causes it you can usually avoid it altogether.

What actually causes the green mark

Sterling silver is not pure silver. It is 92.5% silver mixed with about 7.5% of other metals, and that other portion is almost always copper. Copper is added for strength: pure silver on its own is soft, so a little copper makes a ring hold its shape.

Copper also reacts. Put it against warm skin, sweat, hand cream or soap residue and it slowly forms copper salts on the surface. Those salts are green, they are water-soluble, and they transfer straight onto your skin. That is the whole story. Your skin is not reacting badly and the piece is not fake: the copper in the alloy is simply doing what copper does.

Will sterling silver turn skin green on everyone?

No, and this is where it gets frustrating for people comparing notes. The same ring can mark one person every week and never mark another. What tips the balance is mostly environmental: how much you sweat, how humid your climate is, whether you wear hand cream or sunscreen, how often your hands are in soapy water, and how tightly the piece sits against the skin.

That last point explains why rings are the usual culprits. A pendant swings free and dries between wears; a ring sits in a warm, slightly damp gap all day. Earrings and pendants in the same alloy often behave perfectly well.

Where fine silver fits in

Fine silver is 99.9% silver with essentially no copper in it, which removes the cause rather than managing the symptom. It is a little softer than sterling, so it suits pendants, charms, earrings and chunkier rings better than very thin bands, but for anyone whose skin marks easily it is the straightforward answer.

This is also what silver clay fires down to. The clay handles like modelling clay while you shape it, and after firing you are left with 99.9% fine silver, shrunk by roughly 8-10%. If you would like the longer version of how that works, the complete guide to silver clay covers it properly.

Practical ways to stop the green marks

If you already own sterling pieces you love, you do not need to give them up:

  • Take rings off before washing up, swimming or applying hand cream and sunscreen.
  • Dry your hands properly before putting them back on.
  • Give pieces a wipe with a polishing cloth now and then, so surface copper salts never build up.
  • Store them somewhere dry rather than in a steamy bathroom.

None of this is fussy maintenance. It is really just keeping the metal dry, which is the single biggest factor.

Choosing your metal with this in mind

If your skin marks reliably no matter what you do, it is worth stepping over to fine silver rather than fighting the alloy. And if you like the idea of making the piece yourself, that is genuinely possible at a kitchen table.

Our silver clay starter kit includes the clay, a torch, tools, a cubic zirconia and instructions, so you can shape, fire and finish a piece without a kiln or a workshop. We ship worldwide with duties covered.

So, will sterling silver turn skin green? It can, on some people, in some conditions, because of the copper it contains. Knowing that turns it from a mystery into a choice.
