
Ask what silver doesn't tarnish and you will find a lot of confident answers, most of which are selling something. The accurate answer is less dramatic: no silver is completely tarnish-proof, but the difference between one type and another is large enough to matter in practice. Here is what actually drives it.
What tarnish is, and what causes it
Tarnish is not rust and it is not dirt. It is a thin layer of silver sulfide that forms when silver reacts with sulfur compounds in the air. That is why jewellery darkens faster in some homes than others, and faster near wool, rubber bands and certain cosmetics than in a clean drawer.
The important part is what accelerates the reaction. In most silver jewellery, that is the copper. Sterling silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper, added for hardness. Copper oxidises readily, and it is largely responsible for the speed at which sterling goes dull and for the darker, patchier look it develops.
So what silver doesn't tarnish quickly?
Ranked honestly, from most resistant to least:
- Fine silver (99.9%). Almost no copper, so very little to drive the reaction. It will eventually take on a soft haze in sulfur-rich air, but it stays bright dramatically longer than sterling and cleans up with very little effort.
- Argentium and similar modified alloys. Sterling with germanium replacing some of the copper. Genuinely more tarnish-resistant than standard sterling.
- Standard sterling (92.5%). The most common jewellery silver, and the one most people are thinking of when they complain about tarnish.
- Silver plated. A thin silver layer over a base metal. It tarnishes, and once the layer wears through the metal underneath discolours too.
Rhodium plating over sterling is sometimes sold as the answer. It does work while it lasts, but it is a coating, it wears at contact points, and re-plating is a job for a jeweller. It postpones the problem rather than solving it.
Where silver clay fits
Silver clay is worth mentioning here for a straightforward reason: it fires to 99.9% fine silver, which puts anything you make with it at the top of that list. People are often surprised that a handmade piece stays brighter than a shop-bought sterling one, and this is why. It is not a treatment or a coating — it is simply what the metal is.
The trade-off is the same one that makes it tarnish-resistant. Less copper means softer metal, so fine silver marks more easily than sterling. For pendants, earrings and charms that is rarely an issue. For a heavy ring worn every day it is a genuine consideration.
Keeping any silver bright for longer
Three habits do most of the work:
- Wear it. Regular contact with skin keeps silver polished. Jewellery left in a box tarnishes faster than jewellery in use.
- Store it dry and sealed. A closed pouch or a zip bag with the air pressed out slows tarnish considerably, because it limits the sulfur reaching the surface.
- Put it on last. After perfume, hairspray, lotion and sun cream, not before.

The short version
Nothing is truly tarnish-proof, but fine silver comes closest of the materials people actually make jewellery from, and the reason is simply the absence of copper. If a bright finish that stays bright matters to you, that is the number to look for — 99.9% rather than 92.5%.
