How to Make a Silver Clay Pendant at Home: A Simple Step-by-Step

by Mijn winkel Admin on Jul 31, 2026

Handmade fine silver rings set with coloured cubic zirconia stones

A silver clay pendant is the best possible first project. There is no ring band to size, no join to worry about, and if the shape comes out slightly wonky it reads as handmade rather than wrong. Here is how to make one from start to finish, at a kitchen table, with a torch rather than a kiln.

Why a pendant is the easiest place to start

A pendant is a flat piece with a hole in it. That is genuinely all it has to be. You are not fighting gravity, you are not matching two halves, and the piece is small enough that torch firing is straightforward. It also lets you concentrate on the part that actually makes a piece look good: the surface.

What you need

Silver clay, a roller and spacers to keep the thickness even, a cutter or blade, something to make a neat hole, a torch and a heatproof surface, and a wire brush and polishing tool for the end. Our silver clay starter kit has all of it in one box, along with cubic zirconia stones and printed instructions.

Step 1: Roll and shape

Roll the clay out evenly. Even thickness matters more than anything else at this stage. A piece that is thin in one spot will be fragile there once fired, and that is the spot that breaks six months later. Cut your shape, then smooth the edges with a damp fingertip while the clay is still soft.

If you want texture, now is the moment. Press a leaf, a piece of lace, a stamp or a fingerprint into the surface. Silver clay picks up detail beautifully, and texture is what makes a simple shape look considered rather than plain.

Step 2: Make the hole before it dries

Make the hole for your chain or bail while the clay is still soft. It is far easier now than later, and it is the step people forget. Remember that the piece shrinks by roughly 8-10% during firing, so make the hole a little larger than you think it needs to be.

Step 3: Dry it completely

Let the piece dry fully before firing. Not nearly dry, completely dry. Trapped moisture turns to steam in the flame and can blister or crack a piece. A warm spot speeds things up, and a thicker pendant needs longer than a thin one.

Step 4: Tidy up while it is dry

Dry clay is soft enough to sand and file, and this is where a decent pendant becomes a lovely one. Smooth the edges, even out the back, and clean up the hole. Every mark you leave now will still be there in silver, so it is worth the extra ten minutes.

Step 5: Fire it

Fire the pendant with your torch on a heatproof surface. The binder burns away first, then the silver particles fuse together, and what you are left with is 99.9% fine silver. If you would like the firing step in more detail, our walkthrough on how to use silver clay covers it properly.

Step 6: Brush and polish

Straight out of the flame the piece looks chalky and white. That is normal, not a mistake. Brush the surface with a wire brush and the silver appears. Polish the raised areas and leave the recesses darker if you have used texture, and the detail will stand out properly.

Common first-pendant mistakes

Rolling too thin, forgetting the hole, and firing before the piece is properly dry. All three are easy to avoid once you know about them, and none of them waste the material: unfired clay can be rehydrated and used again.

Once you have made one pendant you will have a feel for the material, and a ring is the natural next step. Our silver clay ring tutorial picks up where this one leaves off. If you already have tools and simply need material, you can order silver clay on its own, and we ship worldwide with import duties covered.
