Push Present Ideas: A Handmade Silver Keepsake for a New Mother

by Mijn winkel Admin on Aug 22, 2026

Hand wearing several handmade fine silver rings set with coloured stones

Most push present ideas fall into one of two groups: something expensive chosen in a hurry, or something thoughtful chosen far too late. The tradition itself is simple enough, a gift for the mother around the birth of a baby, but the shopping lands in the least restful few weeks of anyone's life. That is usually why it ends up generic.

What a new mother will actually wear

The practical constraints are worth taking seriously, because they decide whether a piece is worn or quietly put in a drawer. In the first months jewellery needs to be smooth rather than snagging, easy to wipe clean, straightforward to put on one-handed, and not so precious that it has to come off before every bath.

A heavy statement ring rarely survives that test. A simple pendant, a slim stacking ring or a small charm usually does, and tends to stay in use long after the newborn stage has passed.

Why a keepsake outlasts a purchase

The push present ideas people still talk about years later are almost never the most expensive ones. What makes a piece stick is that it is tied to a specific date and a specific person: an initial, a birth date, a set of coordinates, a shape that means something only to the two of you. Price does not carry that. Detail does.

Five push present ideas that hold up

  • A small pendant carrying the baby's initial or date of birth.
  • A slim stacking ring, with the option of adding one per child later.
  • A single charm for a bracelet she already wears.
  • A pendant set with a stone in the birth month colour.
  • A textured disc taken from something with a story: a piece of lace, a leaf, a fabric weave.

Making the push present yourself

Handmade is not a compromise here. Silver clay lets you shape a piece by hand, dry it, and fire it with a small torch on a heatproof surface. The binder burns away and the silver particles sinter, leaving a piece that is 99.9% fine silver. No kiln and no soldering are needed.

Two things are worth knowing before you start. The piece shrinks by roughly 8 to 10% as it fires, which matters if you are sizing a ring rather than making a pendant. And the finishing, filing and polishing, takes longer than the shaping does. Neither is difficult, but neither is instant.

If you have never worked with it, the silver clay starter kit includes the clay, a torch, the basic tools, a cubic zirconia and instructions, and it ships worldwide with duties covered. How to use silver clay walks through the process step by step, and once you are past the first piece silver clay on its own is what you reorder.

When to make it

The honest answer is: before the birth, if you can. The weeks after are unpredictable, and a project that needs a clear table and an hour of attention is not going to happen on demand. Making it early also means the piece is finished, polished and ready rather than half-done in a drawer.

If that window has already passed, it is not a problem. A pendant is a small piece of work, and a first attempt is genuinely achievable in an afternoon. Late and handmade still beats on time and forgettable.
