Silver Clay Troubleshooting

Almost every silver clay problem has one of four causes: the clay was too dry, the piece was not fully dry before firing, it was not fired hot enough or long enough, or it was fired too hot. Work through the symptom below and you will usually land on one of those.

Why does my silver clay crack while I am shaping it?

The clay has lost too much water. Silver clay starts drying the moment it leaves the packet, and thin edges go first.

Fix: work a single drop of water into the clay with your fingers and knead it until the surface is smooth again. Smooth existing cracks closed with a damp brush.

Prevent: only take out the amount you are using, keep the rest wrapped in cling film, and work on a lightly oiled surface. Rub a little olive oil or balm on your hands before you start.

Why is my clay crumbly and refusing to hold together?

It is too dry to bond. Crumbly clay is not ruined, it just needs rehydrating properly rather than a splash of water on the surface.

Fix: break it into small pieces, add a few drops of water, seal it in cling film and leave it overnight. The water needs time to travel through the binder. Kneading dry clay with wet hands makes a sticky outside and a dry inside.

Why did cracks appear while my piece was drying?

It dried unevenly, usually too fast on one side. The outside shrank while the inside was still wet.

Fix: fill the crack with silver clay paste, let it dry, then sand flush. A repaired crack disappears completely after firing.

Prevent: dry the piece flat on a mesh or a piece of kitchen paper so air reaches both sides, and turn it halfway. Avoid blasting one side with a hairdryer.

Why did my piece break when I picked it up before firing?

Dry unfired clay, called greenware, is as fragile as a dry biscuit. That is normal and not a sign you did anything wrong.

Fix: butter both broken faces with thick paste, press together, let dry fully and sand the seam. After firing the join is as strong as the rest.

Prevent: support the piece from underneath when you move it, and keep walls at least 1.5 mm thick. Rings need at least 2 mm.

Why is my piece brittle or snapping after firing?

It did not sinter fully. This is the single most common firing fault. Sintering is the silver particles fusing together, and it needs both enough heat and enough time.

Fix: fire it again, longer. Under-fired silver can almost always be rescued by a second firing.

Prevent: with a torch, hold the peach-orange glow for the full time rather than heating in bursts. With a kiln, check the schedule on our firing chart. Pieces thicker than 3 mm and rings that will take daily wear are safer in a kiln.

Why is my fired piece grey, dull or chalky instead of shiny?

That white or grey surface is normal and it is not a fault. Freshly fired silver is a microscopically rough, matte white because the surface is a landscape of tiny fused spheres.

Fix: burnish it. Brush with a stainless steel brush and a drop of soapy water, then work up through polishing papers or use a tumbler. The mirror finish is underneath, waiting.

Why did my piece come out with shiny blobs or lose its detail?

It got too hot and started to melt. Fine silver melts at 962 °C and a torch flame is far hotter than that.

Fix: a melted piece cannot be recovered. Keep the silver, it can be sent for refining.

Prevent: watch the colour, not the clock. A peach or soft orange glow is right. If the surface starts to look wet, glassy or mirror-like, pull the flame back immediately. Fire in a dim room so you can read the colour.

Why does my fired piece have blisters or bubbles?

Moisture or trapped air expanded inside the piece. It was fired before it was fully dry, or it was heated too quickly.

Prevent: make sure the piece is bone dry. The mirror test is reliable: put the piece on a mirror or a polished tile for thirty seconds. If it leaves a foggy patch, there is still water in it. Then bring the heat up gradually rather than going straight to full flame.

Why did my ring come out too small?

You forgot the shrinkage, or under-estimated it. Fine silver clay shrinks about 8 to 10 percent in every direction.

Rule of thumb: build the ring about two US sizes larger than the size you want. For a size 7 finished ring, form it at size 9.

Fix: a fired ring can be stretched by roughly half a size on a mandrel. More than that and you risk cracking it. See how to resize a ring and shrinkage explained.

Why did my gemstone crack, cloud over or change colour?

It was not a fireable stone. Most natural stones cannot survive the heat.

Safe to fire: cubic zirconia, lab-created spinel, lab-created corundum, and most man-made stones sold specifically as fireable.

Not safe: opal, emerald, pearl, amber, turquoise, peridot and almost all natural stones. Set those after firing in a bezel or a prong setting instead. See setting gemstones in silver clay.

Why does my syringe keep clogging?

Clay has dried in the tip. A syringe left uncapped for a few minutes will block.

Fix: soak the tip in warm water for ten minutes, then push through gently. Never force it, you will split the barrel.

Prevent: store the syringe tip-down in a glass with a wet sponge or a damp cloth in the bottom, and cap it between every use.

Why is my paste lumpy or too thin?

Paste needs to be mixed and rested, not stirred and used.

Fix: add water a drop at a time for thinner paste, or leave the pot open for a few minutes to thicken. Stir with a small palette knife and let it stand for an hour so the lumps dissolve.

Consistency guide: yoghurt for joining, single cream for filling cracks, milk for painting onto leaves and lace.

Why does the clay stick to everything?

There is no release agent on your hands, tools or texture plates.

Fix: a thin film of olive oil, badger balm or hand balm on your fingers, roller, cutters and textures. Thin is the important word. Too much oil stops paste from bonding later.

Why is there a white residue after firing?

If you fired on a soldering block or vermiculite, that is dust, and it brushes off. If the whole piece is white, see the grey and chalky answer above, that is the normal fired surface.

Why did my piece warp or curl?

It was unsupported while it softened. Silver clay goes briefly soft during sintering before it becomes solid metal.

Prevent: fire flat pieces on a flat, level surface. Support domed and ring shapes on vermiculite or alumina hydrate so nothing sags. Never fire a ring standing upright on the bench.
