Memorial Jewelry for the Loss of a Mother: A Keepsake in Real Silver

by Mijn winkel Admin on Aug 09, 2026

TheLilaLobster silver clay starter kit packaging on a table

Memorial jewelry for the loss of a mother is rarely bought in a hurry. Most people think about it for months before doing anything, and there is no reason to rush. When the moment does feel right, making the piece yourself gives you something a shop cannot: your own hands in the object, and the choice of exactly what goes on it.

Why people make memorial jewelry for the loss of a mother themselves

A bought pendant arrives finished. A piece you make carries the afternoon you made it, and often that afternoon turns out to be the point: a few quiet hours doing something careful while you think about her.

It also means the details are yours. A date, a word she used, the outline of a leaf from her garden, the shape of a button from a coat you kept. None of that fits neatly into an online order form.

What you are working with

Silver clay behaves like modelling clay while you shape it. It is fine silver particles held together by a binder. When you fire it with a small torch, the binder burns away and the particles fuse, leaving 99.9% fine silver. Nothing is plated and nothing is soldered.

If the material is new to you, the complete silver clay guide explains it from the beginning, and how to use silver clay walks through a first piece.

Four keepsakes that work well in silver

Handwriting. A signature or a short line from a card, traced into the surface of soft clay with a fine tool. Keep it short; one word reads better than a sentence.

A date. Simple, and it ages well. Numbers press cleanly into the clay and stay legible after firing.

An impression. A leaf, a piece of lace, the weave of a fabric she wore. Press it into the clay, lift it away, and the detail stays.

A plain disc. Not everyone wants a symbol. A smooth silver disc on a chain is a quiet thing to wear every day, and it is the easiest of the four to make well.

Plan for shrinkage before you commit

Silver clay shrinks by roughly 8-10% as it fires. That is small enough to ignore on a pendant and large enough to matter if you are working to an exact size, so make any hanging hole a little larger than you want it to finish, and keep lettering slightly bigger than feels necessary. Detail tightens as it shrinks, which usually improves it.

Give yourself more than one attempt

Almost nobody makes the piece they pictured on the first try. That is worth knowing in advance rather than discovering on a difficult day. Make a practice piece first with nothing riding on it: learn how the clay dries, how it files, how the torch behaves. Then make the real one.

The silver clay starter kit contains clay, a torch, tools, a cubic zirconia and instructions, which is everything needed for a first piece. Extra silver clay gives you more room to practise. We ship worldwide and cover any duties.

There is no deadline

If you start and find you are not ready, wrap the clay, put it away and come back to it another month. Grief does not run to a schedule and neither does this. The piece will still be there, and so will the silver.
